In one sentence, what problem do you solve and for who?

I create handmade, timeless, personalized jewelry that connects the wearer to the most meaningful times in life.

What's your story?

I attended the University of Michigan's School of Art and Design and majored in Jewelry and Metalsmithing. I launched my fine jewelry collection in 2008 with inspiration coming from the 60s decade's belief in peace, love, and happiness. The collection evolved to feature many personalized pieces as I became a mother. My passion is the art of creating my jewelry by hand and carving every piece in wax. This jewelry is truly made with love!

What does BEING a FoundHer mean to you?

It means everything. This business truly stemmed from a little girl who loved art, followed what made her happy, and evolved into a successful brand. I hope to inspire other young women who love art and creativity. It is always a good idea to follow your dreams.

How do you support other female founders and women in business?

I am always happy to post or collaborate. I try to engage with their content on Instagram. Sometimes it's the little things like a sweet message.

Who is a female entrepreneur you look up to and why?

Melissa Ben Ishay. She's grown her brand in an incredible way. She's sort of had to pivot to a different area (recipes vs cupcakes) but she loves everything about it.

What are the first five things that you did when you were starting your business?

  1. Talk to my parents

  2. Create a list of dream stores

  3. Create a list of press contacts

  4. Lay out all my ideas

  5. Source materials

Who is someone who has helped change or shape your business for the better and what did they do to help you?

My dad has been a really grounding person for me. He isn't in the creative space, he was in real estate, but I find he gives kind, but clear, advice when I need it.

At what point did you make your company a full time gig? How did you know the time was right?

2008. I don't share this with many but I was dealing with some health issues. It felt like the right time to stop working for another company, and instead to focus on my dream alongside my health.

What lesson or skill did you take with you from a prior job to help you succeed in your role today?

I learned that it is important to be a good leader. My bosses had a lot of quirks, to put it kindly. Some of their behavior would not be tolerated in today's world. But it showed me how I did not want to be.

Let’s talk social media—who handles it for your company (you, an internal team member, an outsourced solution?) and what is the secret to making it successful? What is the biggest challenge?

Me! It is a challenge more now than in the past as the algorithm has changed. I think the best part is connecting regularly with customers who have followed me for a long time.

How did you land your first client?

My first clients were through my first retail store when I was in college, at Steven Alan. He has always been a real force in fashion and had the coolest customers at his Tribeca store. Ashley Olsen was one of my first clients through him!

What is something you do differently from the industry standard?

I carve everything by hand. The vision comes from me as does a huge part of creating the piece. I don't just talk about an idea to a jeweler or draw a sketch. I carve a mini sculpture that is the actual piece, aside from having the stones set into it.

What are three strategies you use to market your business, grow brand awareness and generate bottom line growth?

  1. Instagram

  2. Email

  3. Partnerships

What tips would you give to other women who want to start a business or are just getting started?

I would say have a really clear idea of what you want to do. It helps in staying passionate and focused.
